Both the common name, Ceniza, and the generic name, Leucophyllum, refer to the ashy color of the leaves. Especially sensitive to rainfall, the ceniza may burst into full bloom quickly after summer rains. It is an indicator plant of the Chihuahuan Desert and is abundant in Big Bend National Park, Texas.
